US housing starts jumped 12.3 percent from a month earlier to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,364 thousand units in August 2019, the highest level since June 2007 likely supported by lower mortgage rates.

Permits were at the highest level since May 2007,

- Permits went up in the Northeast (26.9 percent to 151 thousand)
- Midwest (14.5 percent to 189 thousand)
- South (11 percent to 748 thousand)
- Declined in the West (-7.8 percent to 331 thousand)
- Permits for July were revised to 1,317 thousand from 1,336 thousand.
