Turkey A Lesson in Why Central Banks Need to Be Independent as Lira Collapses Accelerates

Turkey is a great lesson on why Central Banks and Governments should be independent. Turkey’s currency, the lira collapse accelerated further after its central bank cut its main interest rate by 1%, from 15% to 14% on Thursday with concerted pressure from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wanting rates cut to stimulate the economy. Meanwhile Turks can’t afford bare necessities as inflation runs rampant from the collapsed currency. Inflation in Turkey has climbed above 21.7% over the year.

Bank of England Unexpectedly Raise Interest Rates for First Time in Three Years – TRADERS COMMUNITY

The Bank of England MPC at its December meeting voted 8-1 (Silvana Tenreyro dissented) to raise the Bank Rate from the historic low of 0.1% to 0.25%. The decision was a surprise amid a severe deterioration in the economic outlook with Omicron triggering a collapse in consumer confidence. 

Federal Reserve Leaves Rates Unchanged, Doubles Taper To $30 Billion per Month as Expected – TRADERS COMMUNITY

The Federal Reserve kept rates unchanged at their December meeting, The QE Taper doubled in pace of Treasuries $20B per month as expected, and MBS $10B per month as expected. Dot plot shows three hikes in 2022 vs two hikes expected
