Negative US Retail Sales Show Consumer Hurting More Than Expected

The US advance retail sales for April at -0.2% missed +0.2% estimate, prior month was revised up. These numbers matter with American consumers accounting for 70% of GDP. Last night China retail sales missed also.

The US advance retail sales for April at -0.2% missed +0.2% estimate, prior month was revised up. These numbers matter with American consumers accounting for 70% of GDP. Last night China retail sales missed also.

US Retail Says May

US Advance Retail Sales for April 2019:

  • Advance retail sales-0.2% v +0.2% estimate. Prior revised up to 1.7% from 1.6%
  • Retail sales ex auto +0.1% v +0.7% estimate. Prior revised up 1.3% from 1.2%
  • Retail sales ex auto and gas -0.2% v +0.3% estimate.Prior revised up 1.1% from 0.9%
  • Retail sales control group 0.0% v +0.3% estimate. Prior revised up 1.1% from 1.0%
  • Retail trade sales were down 0.2 percent (±0.5 percent)* from March 2019, but 2.8 percent (±0.5 percent) above last year.
  • Nonstore retailers were up 9.0 percent (±1.2 percent) from April 2018
  • Sporting goods, hobby, musical instrument, and book stores were down 8.5 percent (±2.6 percent) from last year.
