FEAR NOT Brave Investors :

Trade Wars, Trump, Yields and Banks

Stocks showed some softness last week, not a surprise given trade wars, Brexit, Italy and the extreme partisan division of the US last week over SOTUS. It was Dejas Vu for Elon Musk as he trolled the SEC after agreeing to a settlement (one has to wonder about his mental fitness)  Tesla after CEO Musk was sued by the SEC. Brent oil hit a four year high as blood speculators sense angst over expected disruptions from Iran, OPEC’s No. 3 producer, due to the U.S. sanctions that take effect on Nov. 4. Iran but quickly reversed and WTI gave a lot back after another manic run. Last week the Fed hiked rates and promised more, what this means is spooking the savvy players with a much weaker NFP and a widening trade deficit.

The Australian dollar hit a 4 1/2 year low despite record exports underlying the fragility of the trade war. Oh and those emerging markets continue to overhang, particularly the Fragile 5 and Argentina.

Again rationality was not a feature of the week with valuations in the stratosphere and no fear of risk. Real earnings are actually negative year on year with the stock market at lofty levels and the Fed raising rates. I repeat, if you wanted to play in the big room at Vegas, you are living it.  Understand risk and the madness of crowds for your own sanity and wealth.

The week ahead starts off with Chinese markets opening on Monday after a week long-holiday, the yuan and other emerging currencies are bruised with heavy losses against the dollar. Next week’s data by the Mortgage Bankers Association on home loan applications are in focus after 10-year benchmark borrowing costs soared to their highest since May 2011 with 10-year Treasury yields near a seven-year high, pushing borrowing costs on U.S. 30-year mortgages up 10 to 15 basis points by the upcoming week. Brazil is holding its most divisive election in memory with far-right presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro lset to take a commanding first-round lead.

Earnings wise we have Delta Airlines, Walgreens and banking giants PNC, J.P. Morgan, Citigroup and Wells Fargo among the names reporting.
