Japanese Exports Fall -3.8% y/y in Fastest Fall in 2 Years

The trade balance for Japan in December came in as a much bigger deficit than expected at Y-55.3bn versus an expected Y-42.3bn, exports fell sharply as the trade wars bit, exports to China fell 7% y/y while they rose 1.6% to the U.S.

  • Trade balance (adjusted) Y -183.6bn v expected Y -290.7bn, prior was Y -492.2bn
  • Exports -3.8% y/y,  fastest fall in 2 years and under expected -1.8%, prior was 0.1%
  • Imports +1.9% y/y under expected +4.0%, prior was 12.5%

  • Asia -6.9% y/y
  • EU +3.9% y/y
