Phone carriers and phone makers chatter will be about how fast 5G will be. Word is 10-to-12-times faster than the best LTE has to offer. Will we see the rollout In 2018 or 2019? Giiven there is no consumer hardware ready to support it expect the big improvement in 2019. 

5G in your hand

Through the year expect more timely more announcements of 5G mobile networks from all the major carriers. This will likely come in different entry levels and different speeds.

Handset makers such has Apple $AAPL will have the opportunity for expansive handsets that can support one or more  5G options. Expect pricing of new phones to cater to the early 5G adopters. Teasers along the lines of be the first in 2018 and pay the premium no doubt.

What is 5G?

5G stands for fifth-generation wireless technology. What we are getting on our phone now is 4G technology. Think back to before you upgraded and ypu get an idea of what 5G can bring can speed and with speed comes more possibilities Tech watchers see 5G as the foundation for a host of other trends.

At last year's CES Qualcomm CEO Steve Mollenkopf described 5G as the biggest thing since electricity

5G Advantages

  1. Speed. High download speeds and bufferless 4K streaming (What was all that about net neutrality?).
  2. Reliability: 5G is to deliver superhigh speeds that are reliable and consistent, even indoors or in congested areas.
  3. Bandwidth: 5G can support a massive increase in connected devices. Ericsson forecasts 1 billion 5G subscriptions by 2023.
  4. Latency:  With 5G latency will be reduced to 1 millisecond. 

Intel's head of IoT Asha Keddy says we will see 'unlimited data' of 5G networks in 2019.  "We're not just going to be connecting 6 or 7 billion people, we'll be connecting tens of billions of things. It will be phones, lights, cars, buildings, appliances, you name it."

Gartner predicts 20.4 billion connected "things" will be online by 2020.  Gartner sees smart lights that communicate with the electricity grid, connected showers that monitor water use as the norm. Smart cities if you will with smart energy and transport  with connected health care.

5G is seen revolutionizing agriculture. Farms of the future are expected to use connected rainwater sensors conversing with smart sprinkler systems. Farming with robots to another level as sensors measure soil quality and fertilisation.

With driverless cars 5G with low latency brings the safety factors up as changing roads conditions and car shifts will be calculated almost instantly without glitches. The millisecond ping time needed for driverless cars is also key to hyperreal virtual and augmented reality experiences. Haptic VR relies on 5G's low latency to detect where a user is in the virtual space adding touch and feel sensibilities. 

One can only imagine where virtual reality can be taken in the future with 5G.
