Netflix has taken another step in it's evolution, making it's first ever acquisition to own and develop it's own content rather than licence it.  $NFLX bought creator owned comic-book publishing firm Millarworld, creator of Kick-Ass, Kingsman, Wanted and Old Man Logan.

Terms of the transaction have not been disclosed. Netflix said it will develop films, TV shows and kids’ series based on Millarworld’s portfolio of character franchises to life through films, series and kids’ shows. Millarworld will also continue to create and publish new stories and character franchises under the Netflix label.

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said: “As creator and re-inventor of some of the most memorable stories and characters in recent history, ranging from Marvel’s The Avengers to Millarworld’s Kick-Ass, Kingsman, Wanted and Reborn franchises, Mark is as close as you can get to a modern-day Stan Lee.”

Millarworld was created and run by Mark Millar with his wife, Lucy Millar. Millar, from Scotland is considered one of the cutting edge creators and publishes. He spent eight years at Marvel, where he developed comic books and story arcs that led to the first Avengers movie, “Captain America: Civil War.”  This  also led to the recent box office smash “Logan“ ” Between them they grossed over $3 billion in worldwide box office variety magazine said. Avengers” screenwriter Zak Penn said Millar's comic book “The Ultimates”, which in 2002 was named best comic book of the decade by Time’s Techland.com was his blueprint for the Marvel cinematic universe. Quite the accolade and I have to say one of my favorite creators.

Sarandos went further: “Mark is as close as you can get to a modern-day Stan Lee.”

The timing did not go unnoticed as we have Disney earnings this week. Millar said  “This is only the third time in history a major comic book company has been purchased at this level,” after Warner Bros. bought DC Comics in 1968 and Disney bought Marvel in 2009.

Millarworld started in 2004 and has produced 18 character worlds. The three best known outside of the comic book universe are Wanted, Kick-Ass and Kingsman from their success as movie adaptations. The three have grossed nearly $1 billion at the global box office.

The Millarworld stable also includes NemesisJupiter's LegacyJupiter's Circle, Empress, Super Crooks, StarlightChrononautsRebornMPHWantedAmerican Jesus, and Superior.

In Millars own words from his blog post on the deal:

"So what’s next? Well, we’ve been in these talks for many months and a lot of planning has been going on. We’re flying to LA to strategise the next steps and you’ll be hearing about each fascinating turn when I’m allowed to share it. Jupiter’s Legacy and Reborn both concluded in the last few weeks and I’m going undercover between now and Spring as I stockpile all the new projects we’re putting together, but you’ll hear about them very soon."

I for one can't wait to see where the Millar's take us on this phase and their tie up with Netflix.
