    Maersk plans to send its first cargo ship from East Asia to Europe via the Northern Sea Route instead of the Suez Canal.

    Maersk is the world’s largest container shipping company, The Northern Sea Route is considered as an alternative maritime route for the Suez Canal, which is the southern world’s route linking Asia and Europe.

    In few days, the first vessel will sail through the Northern Sea Route from the eastern port of Vladivostok to northeast China through the Bering Strait, to return to the Russian Port of St. Petersburg by the end of September, according to The Financial Times.

    Maersk declared that: “This trip is aimed at testing and collecting data about an unknown shipping route, and at present, we do not consider the Northern Sea Route as an alternative path to our traditionally employed courses.

    Thanks to the Northern Sea Route, commercial trips between Asia and Europe can be shortened to about a week or two. This route is usually available only in the summer, but global warming, accelerated by the end of the 20th century, gave the opportunity to sail through the course year-round.

    The development of the Northern Sea Route comes as part of a strategic plan deployed by Russia aiming to promote the North Pole, an area containing vast reserves of minerals, oil and gas.

    Egypt tunnels to drive under the Suez Canal Near Completion

    The tunnels cost Egypt near $1billion and will reduce travel time to cross the canal from several hours to four minutes
    Four new tunnels, two from Ismailia and two from Port Said will connect mainland Egypt with Sinai Peninsula

    The four road tunnels will be built 48m deep, 10.8m wide and 3.19km long, and provide access for an estimated 45,000 cars and trucks per day, while the rail tunnels will be built at the same depth over a distance of 6.7km and feature five ventilation shafts.

    Once they are completed, the tunnels will link the eastern and western banks of the Suez Canal from Egypt’s homeland cities of Port Said and Ismailia, to the Sinai Peninsula.

    Salvage teams fighting to free the Ever Given container ship are removing part of the Suez Canal’s bank, as the rescue mission enters a critical phase.

    “The coming 24 hours will be crucial,” said Peter Berdowski, CEO of Boskalis, which is part of the salvage effort. “Tomorrow between 4 and 5 a.m. will be a tense moment. A lot will depend on the soil under the ship, but I’d give it a 50% chance that we will succeed.”

    Dredging and digging continues, and another tug is on the way to the giant vessel stranded in one of the world’s most important trade paths. Diggers have removed 27,000 cubic meters of sand, going deep into the banks of the canal ahead of renewed efforts to pull it out on Monday.

    The pile-up of ships — now numbering more than 450 — is one more strain for global supply chains already stretched by the pandemic as the canal is a conduit for about 12% of global trade. Some ships have opted for the long and expensive trip around the southern tip of Africa instead of Suez, and companies are starting to flag the risk of delays.

    Peter Berdowski, the CEO of Boskalis, which is involved in the rescue, said he will be staying up for the attempt to extract the ship before dawn in Suez.

    “At 4 or 5 a.m. we will do a first attempt with the first tugboat, this is definitely one for which I will stay up,” he told Dutch television program Nieuwsuur. “A lot will depend on the soil under the ship, but I’d give it a 50% chance that we will succeed.”

    New Deadline (Sunday, London 9:10 p.m.)

    If the ship hasn’t been refloated by Monday night then on Tuesday containers will start getting offloaded to make the vessel lighter, Mohab Mamish, the president’s canal adviser, told Bloomberg.

    Refloating attempts are due tonight, around high tide, and again on Monday, he said. A marine winch is being prepared in Alexandria for the unloading effort.

    The Line Gets Longer (Sunday, London 8:45 p.m.)

    The number of ships waiting to enter the Suez Canal now exceeds the size of the entire U.S. Navy fleet. Data compiled by Bloomberg shows there are 453 vessels queued up Sunday, compared with around 100 at the start of the blockage.

    Bulk carriers typically hauling commodities such as grains, coal and iron ore account for the biggest share of the vessels stuck in and around the canal. The data also indicate as many as 15 vessels that could be carrying thousands of livestock.

    Dredging Efforts Expanded (Sunday, London 8 p.m.)

    Efforts are focused on expanding the dredging area around the ship — including digging into the side of the waterway, according to the Suez Canal Authority.

    A refloating attempt is scheduled for 4 a.m. local time on Monday after an extra tug arrives, Inchcape Shipping Services said. The authority gave no timetable for refloating efforts.

    President’s Adviser Sounds Optimistic (Sunday, London 7:40 p.m.)

    An adviser to President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s said he was hopeful the ship could be freed on Monday.

    “We hope that the ship stranded in the Suez Canal will be released tomorrow,” Mohab Mamish, adviser for the canal, told Al Arabiya.

    Tugs Surround Vessel, Wait for Winds to Calm (Sunday, London 3:50 p.m.)

    Tugs are now around the ship but re-floating operations have not started due to strong winds, according to Inchcape Shipping Services, a maritime services provider.

    The next high tide is at 11.23 p.m. local time, according to tide-forecast.com.

    Around 200,000 Animals Stranded (Sunday, London 2:30 p.m.)

    About 200,000 animals could be stranded in the ships held up at the canal, according to an estimate from advocacy group Animals International. The group has tallied 18 vessels that departed Romania, Spain and South America and are currently stuck in the queue. Many are likely carrying sheep, said European Union director Gabriel Paun. Vessels can’t easily unload animals in other nearby countries due to health protocols or a lack of trade agreements, he said.

    “It’s just another incident which shows that no matter which contingency plan you design, tragedies may occur over and over as long as we don’t replace the export of live animals with the export of refrigerated and frozen meat,” Paun said.

    Ever Given’s Front Was Damaged; Now Stable (Sunday, London 12:40 p.m.)

    The ship’s front, or bow, was damaged and water entered two tanks, according to a spokesman for Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, the vessel’s manager.

    High-powered pumps were used to get the water out the compartments and the vessel is stable, said the spokesman. Once the Ever Given’s moved, there will be an assessment to determine whether it’s fit to leave the canal. There’s nothing at the moment to suggest it won’t be able to sail out the waterway, the spokesman said.

    Authorities Prepare to Off-load Ship (Sunday, London 12:15 p.m.)

    Osama Rabie, head of the Suez Canal Authority, told television channel Arabiya that he was preparing for the option of lightening the vessel by removing containers. But he hopes it won’t be necessary as it would be difficult and protracted.

    Canal Authority Dredges to 18 meters (Sunday, London 11:30 a.m.)

    The Suez Canal Authority said in a statement it’s so far shifted 27,000 cubic meters of sand around the ship to reach a depth of 18 meters.

    Syrian Oil Supplies Delayed (Sunday, London 10:30 a.m.)

    Syria’s oil ministry said the stranded ship has delayed the arrival of a tanker carrying fuel to the country. The government is rationing supplies as a result. “Waiting for the return of normal movement of navigation via the Suez Canal may take an unknown time,” it said.

    Container ship Ever Given returns to Suez canal for another attempt

    In a rematch of the struggle that dominated global headlines earlier this year, the 400-metre, 220,000 tonne container ship that became lodged in the Suez canal for nearly a week, disrupting trade on a global scale, is having another go.

    Several weeks after finally docking at the UK port of Felixstowe – after a months-long negotiation over who should bear the costs of blocking the shipping lane for six days in March – the vessel returned to Port Said, Egypt, on Thursday night.

    On Friday, the Panamanian-flagged, Japanese-owned ship began its journey through the canal, accompanied by two tug boats, the state-owned newspaper Al-Ahram reported. Live ship-tracking showed the vessel successfully negotiating the early stages of the canal on its way toward the Red Sea.

    The operation in March to free the ship from the canal caused a backlog that delayed the journeys of hundreds of ships, forcing some to take a much longer route around the southern tip of Africa.

    A dispute over compensation resulted in the ship being held by Egyptian authorities for months, with its owner, Shoei Kisen Kaisha, arguing the canal authority was at fault for allowing the Ever Given to enter despite poor weather, and the canal authority demanding nearly a billion dollars to cover what it argued were its losses.

    The Ever Given was released in July after the two sides reached an undisclosed deal, with the owner saying: “Our company … will continue to be a regular and loyal customer of the Suez canal.”

    That appears to be the case as the ship makes its way through the canal with which it will be forever associated in infamy, despite the fact, according to Al-Ahram, it passed successfully through the Suez canal 22 times since its manufacture in 2018.
