Where Independent Traders, Investors, and Dribblers Thrive
I confine my loops to a maximum of 8 bars. It is big enough to play about with variation and drumming without becoming bored, and it’s big enough to build on in the next batch of loops. Melodic portions have 32 bars (8 again for buildup and 16 for the drop). The trick is to layer melodies and introduce new ones on top of the existing ones. Of course, not too much, but enough to keep the listener interested by always bringing something new. I would prefer keeping your melodic loop up to 8 bars or less.
