They were on their way to Fargo, North Dakota, to continue the Winter Dance Party Tour planned to cover 24 cities in just three weeks. Holly hired the plane after the trio’s tour bus had mechanical problems February 3, 1959; the day was immortalized as “The Day the Music Died” in the Don McLean song “American Pie.
