Christmas is getting closer and Inc. is trying to get ahead of the mulltiple constraints in the air.  First up Amazon is priming its workforce for the holiday season.

The e-commerce giant aims to hire 150,000 seasonal employees in the U.S., and has moved to get needed workers for the holidays amid a tight labor market.  Businesses from stores and restaurants to amusement parks and manufacturers are competing for workers, in some cases offering pay raises, hiring bonuses and other perks.

Amazon’s number of seasonal hires is more than the 100,000 Amazon announced last year and matches the number that rival Walmart Inc. said it would add this year.

Amazon’s new CEO Andy Jassy said that “over the past 18 months, our consumer business has been called on to deliver an unprecedented number of items, including PPE, food, and other products that helped communities around the world cope with the difficult circumstances of the pandemic. At the same time, AWS has helped so many businesses and governments maintain business continuity, and we’ve seen AWS growth reaccelerate as more companies bring forward plans to transform their businesses and move to the cloud.”

  • AMZN’s revenue grew by 27% in Q2, well below the 45.0%.
  • Q2 midline revenue of $109BN is projected to grow just 13.4% Y/Y, the slowest growth in the past decade.
  • operating margin slipped, dropping from 8.2%, which was the highest in recent history, to a far more mediocre 6.8%.
  • AWS sales picked up modestly, rising 37% Y/Y to 14.8%, beating estimate.
  • Growth in online stores slowed significantly to just 16%, the lowest since 2019.

Earnings Preview Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) report Q2 2021  with projected EPS: $12.20 on projected revenue of $115.34 billion. Revenue will get a boost from its annual Prime Day, held in June this year. This event is usually held in July (third quarter), though it was held in October (fourth quarter) last year.

In the first quarter, Amazon’s revenue surged 44% year over year to $108.5 billion, exceeding the $104.5 billion the Street had expected as well as its own guidance of $100 billion to $106 billion. Revenue in the North America, international, and Amazon Web Services segments rose 40%, 60%, and 32%, respectively. Net income rose 224% to $8.1 billion, which translated to EPS increasing 215% to $15.79 crushing the consensus estimate of $9.54.

In the prior four quarters, its earnings beat the analyst consensus estimate by 66% (first quarter of 2021), 95% (fourth quarter of 2020), 67% (third quarter of 2020), and 606% (second quarter of 2020).

The biggie is cloud behemoth Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud. Microsoft and SAP both reported robust Cloud numbers. The big question is that from AWS or new customers?

In cloud-computing infrastructure, Amazon has a substantial market share lead over Microsoft Azure, Google’s Cloud platform and IBM, as well as other players like Alibaba and Oracle. While AWS has maintained growth above 40 percent, Microsoft and Google are currently expanding much faster and picking up share. AWS accounts for around 73 percent of Amazon’s operating income in Q1 and continues to grow.

AWS is the envy of Apple, Oracle, Google, IBM and every other niche cloud provider. AWS is the leading platform in this growth market.  Amazon Web Services., Amazon’s cloud business in just ten years has become the fifth-largest business software provider in the world.

Amazon has proven that it can diversify beyond e-commerce whilst at the same time Microsoft, Google, IBM and others are all chasing AWS in the cloud.

Brick and Mortar Acquisitions and Partnerships

Over the past few years Amazon has been on a buying spree with WholeFoods, talk of Amazon Moving Into Real Estate and last year the deal with Sears where Kenmore appliances will be sold through Amazon. Investors will be looking for updates on these and others and a clarification of just what is their strategy going forward. One I would like to hear about is the Whole Foods locations and the $400 billion plus pharmacy market.

Kohl’s Corporation $KSS Amazon has started selling smart-home products in Kohl’s stores and cater for product returns. With Whole Foods, Sears and now Kohls Amazon is stealthly building brick-and-mortar retail for it’s digital base.
